South Korea is planning to retaliate for hydrogen bomb tests carried out by North Korea - by reinstating cross-border propaganda broadcasts.

The South's presidential office announced plans to resume the broadcasts tomorrow - a tactic the North's leader Kim Jong Un considers an act of war.

It comes as US spy planes were seen taking off from an air base in southern Japan amid speculation they could be involved in trying to determine what kind of nuclear device North Korea detonated.

With North Korea announcing it conducted a nuclear test of a hydrogen bomb, China, India, Russia and other nations are condemning the move. The U.S. says it has yet to verify the claim, but it also reiterated its stance that North Korea can't be allowed to become a nuclear state.

News of the test was announced via state-owned Korean Central Television, which reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally ordered the test in December and gave final approval over the weekend. Last month, Kim said his country has developed a hydrogen bomb; experts remain skeptical of that claim.

VOA: North Korea's 'Successful' Hydrogen Bomb Test Met with Skepticism

SEOUL — In a surprise and rare televised announcement over state television KCNA, North Korea said it successfully conducted a thermonuclear hydrogen bomb test Wednesday. Pyongyang's announcement was met with widespread skepticism.

"We've now become a nuclear state that also holds a hydrogen bomb,” said the KCNA announcer.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Punggye-ri, where North Korea conducted three previous nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

A. The North’s government said that it had detonated a hydrogen bomb — its first — at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

“This test is a measure for self-defense the D.P.R.K. has taken to firmly protect the sovereignty of the country and the vital right of the nation from the ever-growing nuclear threat and blackmail by the U.S.-led hostile forces and to reliably safeguard the peace on the Korean Peninsula and regional security,” it said, referring to the North’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

1. Growing arsenal – 10? 20? More?

The U.S. used to have a relatively benign view that the North Korean nuclear arsenal amounted to some ten atomic bombs. But, contact with Chinese academics in 2014 has led to a realization that in China, there is a belief in a much bigger arsenal. First, North Korea could have 20 warheads now or soon. Second, it could grow its arsenal from there. The days when it had only a couple of warheads are long past. It is becoming one of the world’s nuclear powers now.

North Korea today conducted a 'successful' hydrogen bomb test, Pyongyang has confirmed.

The detonation of the thermonuclear weapon triggered a massive 5.1 magnitude earthquake when it exploded at 10am local time on Wednesday.

Its ignition ends months of speculation that leader Kim Jong-Un had developed such a weapon, which is lighter yet even more powerful than other nuclear bombs.
